In the hadiths he says that the community of the Mahdi will consist of 313 people. Since the Mahdi is such a perfect person and since he has such a fine understanding of Islam, why do 313 people follow him in the End Times? When we consider the wisdom with which God does this, a small community is much more maneuverable. It is exposed to less risk. It can be more easily controlled. That is why God keeps it small. The human brain is small, but it runs the entire body. The community of the Mahdi will be small, like a brain. They are a small community that act as the brain of the Islamic world. The Islamic world looks on the community of the Mahdi as a foundation post, sometimes willingly and sometimes not. For example, it is freed from the destructive nature of Darwinism. Why? It says, “Since such a community is bringing Darwinism down, there is no need for me to investigate the subject.” Since there is such a small community, that is so devout and intelligent and cultured, why should I fall into weakness of faith, it asks. Since intelligent people are faithful, then faith is right. It is freed from doubt on the subject of faith.

In the face of those who regard Islam as a religion of fanatics it says, “These people are exceedingly high quality, intelligent and virtuous. Since they do not regard the faith as fanatical, but as a system that saves the world, it must be a true faith,” they say.  “So I must not become a prey to false ideas.”

So this brain constantly encourages the Islamic world. The Islamic world receives a light from it, whether it wants to or not. In this way, the Islamic world is constantly strengthened, like the body is strengthened. The system of the Mahdi produces a healthy body. A healthy brain produces a healthy body. Were it not for such a healthy brain, the Islamic world could not be that strong.

For example, a modern Muslim conception of Islam is also widespread in Saudi Arabia. And in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. Iran is developing an increasingly modern conception of Islam. Turkey has gone from one success to another with Tayyip Erdoğan abandoning the orthodox conception of Islam and adopting a more modern one, with the system of the Mahdi. The [opposition party] has also begun changing itself under the influence of the spirit of the system of the Mahdi. It has become more religious. Otherwise its old spirit was totally different. That means it will change even more.

The system of the Mahdi is a small community, but a brain that affects the entire Islamic world. That brain constantly reinforces the body, making it healthy. That body will now enfold the world. And when it enfolds the world, the body will find its own brain. It will find the brain when it starts looking at the question of who brought it to this state. Once it finds its own brain the community of 313 people will be revealed.

At the moment, almost every community can draw courage from the system of the Mahdi and continue on its path with strengthened faith. Otherwise, a large mass would long since have collapsed in moral terms. It would long since have lost its zeal. It is the system of the Mahdi that gives zeal and enthusiasm to the world. It gives a spirit to the Muslim world. Otherwise most Muslims would have become apathetic and hopeless. Bediuzzaman says that the greatest enemy for of the Islamic world is  ‘despair and hopelessness.’ The system of the Mahdi eliminates despair and hopelessness by constantly bringing the world zeal, fervor and enthusiasm. We will see the result of that more clearly in 10-20 years.

They are suspicious of the community of the Mahdi. The whole Islamic world will be suspicious of it. It is because of that suspicion the community will number 313. That doubt will not be eliminated. Our Prophet says in a hadith that “A great scholar from Istanbul will accuse the Mahdi of apostasy, saying he has abandoned the faith.” Our Prophet (pbuh) describes those days as if he had actually seen them.
