Remembering Allah in times of trials

HARUN YAHYA
Published — Friday 20 March 2015

Every person has moments in life that may be called difficult. Most people, who live away from the moral values of the Qur’an, experience these moments with feelings like discomfort, sadness and boredom. In such environments, they display traits of aggressiveness, tension and a disputatious attitude. The reason for these reactions is that they do not have faith in Allah and the perfection of the destiny He created. The reasons, which prevent these people seeing the goodness behind these events, can be summed up as follows:

Some people think that most of their lives develop as a result of coincidences in a flow. Everything from big incidents like having cancer or losing a close one in a traffic accident, to the food he eats or the clothes he wears are special events preordained in that person’s destiny. Allah creates all these incidents down to the finest detail for that person’s trial.

A person is subject to a continuous trial throughout his life; nothing happens by coincidence. If a person cannot grasp this fact and thinks that events take place independent of Allah, then he is greatly mistaken. This is because all things that happen through the course of life are a test Allah created especially for this person, and this person is held responsible for his reactions and behaviors.

Allah has infinite power and He is very merciful (Al-Halim) to His servants; He does not give His servants a trial that is beyond their power. This is a promise made by Allah: “We do not impose on any self any more than it can stand. With Us there is a Book which speaks the truth. They will not be wronged.” (Qur’an, 23:62)

Every difficult trial, diseases, accidents, financial and spiritual troubles a person may face in the life of this world are trials within the boundaries that he can handle.

A person may think that he has no way out, everything is over or that this is a difficulty he cannot overcome. He may display a rebellious attitude by forgetting that there may be a goodness in that incident. But all of these are actually empty illusions given by satan. A believer should never fall into despair, as Allah commands us, and should deeply think about every situation he faces.

“Or did you imagine that you were going to enter the Garden without Allah knowing those among you who had struggled and knowing the steadfast?” (Qur’an, 4:142)

People make many plans for their future, the next day or an hour from now. These plans are sometimes realized according to plan, but sometimes they are hindered due to unexpected developments. People who are astray from the moral values of religion think that these disruptions happen by coincidence. Whether or not a plan is carried out or not, all incidents a person faces are in that person’s destiny and are events preordained by Allah. “He directs the whole affair from heaven to earth...” (Qur’an, 32:5) “We have created all things in due measure.” (Qur’an, 54:49)

A person may think that he lives what he plans, but actually he only lives the destiny Allah creates for him. Not even a single moment is outside destiny.

A person who could not understand faith would think that all incidents are a result of random developments and coincidences. When something bad happens to him because of that, he would name such things with meaningless words like “luck.”

A person is a being limited to time and place. Everything that happens in a person’s life is created by Allah Who is not bound by time and place and Who has “infinite wisdom.”

“Nothing occurs, either in the earth or in yourselves, without its being in a Book before We make it happen. That is something easy for Allah.”(Qur’an, 57:22)

People who have sincere faith live their lives knowing that everything in their lives is subject to the destiny Allah creates and they are all created for a reason. As a result of this they always reach goodness.

“Say: ‘Nothing can happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is Our Master. It is in Allah that the faithful should put their trust.’”(Qur’an, 9:51)

It is revealed to us in the Qur’an that satan is thankless and rebellious. We understand from the verses that he will approach people from the right, left, front and back and try everything to divert people from the true path. One of the most important methods satan uses to reach this evil goal is the prevent people from seeing the best in everything that happens, and thus make them rebellious and unthankful towards Allah. Satan tries whisper suggestions into people’s hearts by finding their sensitive areas.

Satan influences people in two ways to prevent the good. The first is that he does everything he can to prevent good deeds and tries to guide people to cling to the life of this world. The second, he tries to prevent people from seeing the good and wisdom behind incidents.

However, Allah has granted people countless blessings. He shows His kindness to people with blessings from birth till death. Therefore believers take Allah as a friend and guide, trust and submit to Allah even if they do not understand the wisdom of something they are faced with and endure in knowing that a good result will surely come out of it. As revealed in the verse “...It may be that you hate something when it is good for you and it may be that you love something when it is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know. (Qur’an, 2: 216)

Islam has no place for selfish desires

HARUN YAHYA
Published — Friday 13 March 2015

Allah Almighty has created the human soul with a predisposition to selfishness as a test. Unless he lives by the moral values of the Qur’an and tames his earthly desires, this feeling will come to dominate his whole moral framework.

Such a person generally thinks of himself alone, rather than everyone else. He always wants the best, finest and most perfect of everything for himself. He wants to have possessions and children and for his own family merely to be comfortable. In face of difficulties, he will expect the people around him to undergo all kinds of risks and troubles for him and to support him, even at the cost of their own interests. He seeks to protect his own whims and interests and to ensure his own ease and comfort.

When the situation is different he can forgo many things he values, for the sake of protecting his own interests and preventing any harm coming to him.

Allah has revealed this passionate selfish feeling in human earthly desires as follows in the Qur’an: “Truly man was created headstrong – desperate when bad things happen, begrudging when good things come.” (Qur’an, 70:19-21)

They are a major threat to modern societies. The materialist thinking that is widespread in modern societies that do not live by religious moral values, reinforces the selfish and egotistical spirit in human nature and disseminates a “me-first” philosophy. Indeed, the idea of “So long as I’m all right, who cares what happens to anyone else?” or “Looking out for number one” generally dominates such societies.

Thus, oppressed and poor people; their children devoid of education or food; are of no interest to such people. This social structure generally leads to a troubled and unhappy atmosphere.

Only people living by the moral values of the Qur’an can bring about any change in such a contaminated society; only they can change the people of selfish interest — those who protect their own interests and violate everyone else’s; and who have no love or fear of Allah.

Islam cultivates love of Allah and which is the only way to acquire such values of good conscience as compassion and helpfulness, which are at the root of the Qur’anic moral values.

Fear and love of Allah enables people to submit themselves to Him, to see the best in everything and to have compassion. In the verses Allah reveals how the only interest of concern to believers is His approval: “They fulfill their vows and fear a Day whose evil will spread far and wide. They give food, despite their love for it, to the poor and orphans and captives: ‘We feed you only out of desire for the Face of Allah. We do not want any repayment from you or any thanks. Truly We fear from our Lord a glowering, calamitous Day.’ So Allah has safeguarded them from the evil of that Day and has made them meet with radiance and pure joy.” (Qur’an, 76:7-11)

Our Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “He who goes to bed full when his neighbor is hungry is not one of us.” It is an important warning to all those believers who desire to earn Allah’s approval. Therefore, anyone aiming to earn Allah’s approval will not just settle for a solution to his own problems; he will also assume responsibility for resolving the problems of others around him in need.

This may of course require people to give up things they love or to sacrifice their own comfort. The way that Muslims look to protect and watch over the poor by giving alms, help people in need by canceling their debts and spend their possessions on Allah’s path, rather than accumulating and hoarding them, are moral virtues bestowed by the ethical values of the Qur’an.

Responding to people’s needs and treating them kindly are forms of behavior that prevent atrophocation of the conscience. Empathizing with others, treating the needy with affection and showing respect and love make it possible to eliminate cruelty and selfishness. Verses reveal that the reward for good behavior comes in the Presence of Allah: “Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him. Be good to your parents and relatives and to orphans and the very poor, and to neighbors who are related to you and neighbors who are not related to you, and to companions and travelers and your slaves. Allah does not love anyone vain or boastful.” (Qur’an, 4:36)

Faith perfects people’s behavior, as it does so many other traits. A believer who constantly heeds his conscience as required by religious moral values will always behave in the best, most considerate, trust-inspiring and tolerant manner.

Someone possessed of these moral attributes has earned merit for his own life in the hereafter. At the same time, he is instrumental in freeing the world from its self-interested and selfish nature, and making it a place of the delights of Islam.

Looking at this life from grave?

Looking at this life from grave?

Life flies by in the blink of an eye. One moment you are in your 20s, the next you are in your 40s; then you are at death’s door. While life flies by so fast, death comes when a person is not expecting it and leaves that person all alone, having left behind all his friends and everyone he knew behind. That person may be the richest man in the world, a famous star or a scientist known all over the planet; all his real estate and palaces will never alter that reality. On the day of one’s death, one meets the angels that will take away one’s soul in a full state of submission to them, while the body is placed into the grave prepared for it to rot.

The life that passes with great bustle over the course of 60 or 70 years eventually comes to an end in the grave. Let us imagine for one moment that such a person looks at the life of this world from his grave. What will he see? He will see that other people are now living in that home he valued so much, every corner of which he furnished and decorated.

Pictures of other people adorn the living room. Other people are using his car or the jewelry that he loved so much once. His other possessions have been given away, and almost nothing that once belonged to him remains.

Other people are working hard in the business he founded with such effort and spent long hours in every day. He wants to tell them that death is imminent and of the transitory nature of the life of this world, but not a word leaves his lips. He merely watches the life of this world from another dimension. The people in that workplace are all laughing together, holding meetings, eating with friends or striving hard to make money. While people in this world are so distracted, people in the grave know that it is all insignificant and temporary. A person will not be able to take even so much as a handkerchief to the other side. You may amass a vast amount of money in this world, and have gold in banks and shares on the Stock Exchange yet these things are all meaningless: One cannot take a thing from this world into the hereafter.

That same person then looks at his family, children and friends in this world from the grave. He sees that some are on the brink of death, some have grown old and are fighting diseases, while others have long since joined him in the grave. The life they spent together has passed. The days when they ate and talked and worked together are over. But he looks around and can see none of them with him. The only One he sees as he lies all alone in the grave is Allah:

“You have come to Us all alone just as We created you at first, leaving behind you everything We bestowed on you. We do not see your intercessors accompanying you, those you claimed were your partners with Allah. The link between you is cut. Those you made such claims for have forsaken you.” (Surat Al-An’am, 94)

If the person looking from the grave at the life of this world did not believe during his life, if he did not turn to our Lord, his Creator, and if he rejected worship and followed satan instead, he will be in a state of the most terrible regret. All his pride and arrogance in this world have given way to utter helplessness, weakness and wretchedness. That body he so valued has lost all its beauty, and is now old and squeezed into a cramped grave. All that trouble for the sake of amassing possessions in this world, all the efforts to please other people for that purpose, all the concessions and all the rewards are in vain. There is not a single thing in his hands any more. The reward for those pointless endeavors is the eternal life of hell:

“Abandon those who have turned their religion into a game and a diversion and who have been deluded by the life of this world. Remind by it lest a person is delivered up to destruction for what he has earned with no protector or intercessor besides Allah. Were he to offer every kind of compensation, it would not be accepted from him. Such people are delivered up to destruction for what they have earned. They will have scalding water to drink and a painful punishment because they were disbelievers.” (Surat Al-An’am, 70)

Will not the person looking at the life of this world from the grave say, “My Lord, I have been a fool to become caught up in this world. How could I have sought fun and entertainment, without ever thinking, or seeing the blessings You created and giving thanks for them? I never once felt curious about the Qur’an You sent and opened it up; I turned away from the thousands of verses You sent for me. But now I look and see that the world I valued so much and all the friends who used to help me with everything are all gone. My children, spouse and brothers and sisters are not here. You My Lord is the only One that is here with me. This distracting and fun-filled world eventually ends in eternal paradise or hell. But I failed to see. Only now do I realize that real life only begins in the hereafter.”

And that denier will go on to say, “I cannot describe the terrible regret I am feeling now. Send me back, O Lord. Let me one of the pure, one of Your servants with whom You are well pleased.”

A believer who spent his entire life in faith will also look at the life of this world from the grave. But a gloriously beautiful paradise full of countless blessings has been prepared for him. In paradise he will find the finest examples of all that he spent and used on Allah’s path. If his wife and family and friends were also believers, he and they will sit on thrones and laugh and they shall enjoy themselves together. He spent all his life seeking Allah’s approval and has finally attained eternity in the gardens of Eden. Believers encounter delights they had never expected in paradise and are smothered in blessings, while unbelievers are deprived of even a single drop of water. So the end result of a life spent in faith and good conscience is paradise, while the end result of a life spent in unbelief and foolishness is hell. Let nobody become aware of this fact only when they reach the grave and pass through that gate from which there is no return.

“Those whose scales are heavy, they are the successful. Those whose scales are light, they are the losers of their selves, remaining in hell timelessly, for ever.” (Surat Al-Muminun, 102-103)

Natural Hazards and Disasters

The Truth Of The Life Of This World
Natural Hazards and Disasters
The world is anything but serene and still. We are all vulnerable to natural threats, both internal and external. Meteor showers, asteroids are only a few of the factors likely to pose threats to the world from space. As for the seemingly solid earth, the planet's interior has an inner core of molten elements. It surely would not be an exaggeration to call this part of the earth, which remains invisible to our eyes, "a flaming core". There also exists an atmosphere surrounding the earth, which is a "shield" against external threats. Yet, no part of the earth is immune against the effects of atmospheric forces like thunderstorms, storms, or hurricanes.

Natural hazards may strike at any time. They can cause considerable loss of life and property. Generally referred to as "natural" disasters, earthquakes, lightning, flash floods, global wildfires, acid rain, and tidal waves have different intensities and effects. What is common to all these disasters is that in just moments they can reduce a city, with all its inhabitants, to ruin. What is most important, no human being has the power to combat or prevent any of these hazards.

Heavy destruction is the legacy of catastrophes all over the planet. Yet, a disaster always affects only a particular region of the earth, thanks to nature's delicate balance which is a creation of Allah. A significant protection exists on earth for all living things as well as for human beings. The possibility of a devastating natural disaster always lurks in spite of this protection. Allah creates these disasters to show us how insecure our habitation can sometimes be. These outbursts of nature are reminders to all mankind that we have no control whatsoever over the planet. Likewise, each disaster serves the purpose of reminding us of our inherent weakness. These are surely warnings to those that can contemplate the significance of such events and draw lessons from the experience of others.

What other lessons should man learn from natural disasters?

The world is specially created for man. The reason why man is created is evident as the verse suggests:
"He it is who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, and His Throne was over the waters, that He might try you, which of you is best in conduct." (Surah Hud: 7)
The "setting" for this "test" is quite elaborate, however, and each event is a component of this sophisticated setting. Furthermore, none of these natural phenomena occur randomly; all have a scientific explanation. For instance, the earth's gravitational force explains why we do not drift off into space; rain falls when water vapour reaches a certain level of saturation. The same kind of causation is also valid for death, accidents or disease. Numerous causes can be cited for why a man dies, becomes sick, or has an accident. Yet, what really matters is not the number of these reasons but the "reliability" of the system these causes and their consequences rest upon. One particular aspect of this system is important; each incident proceeds in a way such that the human mind can entirely understand it. Allah warns man by means of natural disasters. An earthquake, for instance, kills thousands of women, children and young people and leaves many more injured. Those who are heedless of the warnings of Allah are prone to explain such incidents as "natural" phenomena and little understand that Allah creates these for specific purposes. Let us think for a moment: what would happen if only those who are guilty before Allah died in an earthquake? In such a case, the appropriate basis for the "test" of humankind would not be established. That is why Allah creates each phenomenon in a "natural" setting. Only those who are aware of the existence of Allah and have a deep comprehension of His creation understand the divine rationale behind this "natural" appearance. In the verse, "Every soul shall taste death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. To Us must you return," (Surat al-Anbiya: 35), Allah states that He tests man through good as well as bad events.

That many people are affected by a disaster is the riddle of this test. One should always keep in mind that Allah is the All-Knowing Judge and "the Decision between them at judgement will be in perfect justice." (Surat az-Zumar: 75).

All events happening to a person in this life are a part of the test. Those who are truly believers comprehend the essence of this riddle. Whenever a misfortune befalls them, they turn to Allah alone and repent. They are servants of Allah and are aware of the promise of Allah:
Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods and lives and the fruits (of your toil), but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere, who say, when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return". They are those on whom (descend) blessings from Allah, and mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance. (Surat al-Baqarah: 155- 157)
As is stated in the verse, all people, believers and disbelievers, are tested in many ways: sometimes by natural disaster, at other times by something happening in our daily lives, a disease or an accident that befalls us. Such misfortunes strike individuals as well as societies and cause material loss along with spiritual suffering. A wealthy man may become bankrupt, a girl with good looks may receive a severe injury on the face, or a city may be reduced to rubble by an earthquake. These incidents are all clear demonstrations of how, at any moment, events can alter our lives.People should be able to draw lessons from these events. No doubt, Allah does not create anything without a purpose; each disaster is a reminder for human beings whose purpose is to save humans from the perversity they are in. In the Qur'an, Allah says that without His leave, nothing can occur on earth:
No kind of calamity can occur, except by the leave of Allah: and if anyone believes in Allah, (Allah) guides his heart (aright): for Allah knows all things. (Surat at-Taghabun: 11)

Nor can a soul die except by Allah's leave, the term being fixed as by writing. If any desires a reward in this life, We shall give it to him; and if any desires a reward in the hereafter, We shall give it to him. And swiftly shall We reward those that (serve Us with) gratitude. (Surah Ali-'Imran: 145)
Another lesson one draws from disasters is that man, assuming himself to be mighty on earth, realises that he is simply weak and actually does not have the strength to cope with disasters, which happen in a moment by the will of Allah. Man can provide no help either to himself or to anyone else. Surely Allah is Omnipotent. This is stated in the following verse:
If Allah touch you with affliction, none can remove it but He; if He touch you with happiness, He has power over all things. (Surat al-An'am: 17)
In this chapter, a comprehensive account of types of disasters affecting the earth will be given. The purpose is to remind people that this world is not a place for which to feel blind affection. These incidents indicate how desperately we need Allah's guidance and help. This desperation is a clear statement that people are impotent before Allah. As is said in the verse; "and nor have you, besides Allah, any protector or helper." (Surat al-'Ankabut: 22)Earthquakes

Earthquakes are the most devastating natural forces on earth. The worst loss of life occurs during earthquakes. Research reveals that every two minutes somewhere the surface of the earth cracks. According to statistics, the earth shakes millions of times a year. On average, the intensity of three hundred thousand of these earthquakes is minor; they are imperceptible tremors and cause no destruction at all. Twenty of them, on the other hand, are powerful earthquakes which convulse the land. Yet since they often do not hit densely populated areas, they kill few people, if any, and cause little economic loss. Only five of these earthquakes reduce buildings to heaps of rubble.

This information shows that people do not frequently encounter earthquakes. No doubt, this is Allah's special protection against disasters for humankind.

In our day, only a city or a province becomes subject to damaging earthquakes. Yet, by the will of Allah, an earthquake affecting the whole planet could happen at any time. This type of shaking of the ground could end life on earth. The structure of the earth is quite vulnerable to quakes; a sudden movement or rupture of large masses of rock within the earth's crust or upper mantle would make catastrophe inescapable.

An earthquake has no relation with the type of soil that amplifies the effects of seismic waves travelling through it. An earthquake may still occur even when the natural conditions for an earthquake do not exist. By the will of Allah, an earthquake may happen at any time. Yet, Allah specially creates insecurity and instability in some parts of the land. This is to remind people that, at any time, an unexpected incident may place their lives in jeopardy. In the Qur'an, Allah warns people against a possible calamity:
Do then those who devise evil (plots) feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them up, or that the wrath will not seize them from directions they little perceive? (Surat an-Nahl: 45-47)
These earthquakes shaking the earth for only seconds can last for hours, even days. While recovering from a devastating disaster, people can suffer another. This is surely easy for Allah. However, by His mercy, Allah protects man and with such disasters reminds him, now and then, that he has no control whatsoever over his life.At this point, it could be beneficial to remember a major earthquake, which took place in the 20th century.

Technology Defeated: Kobe

Today's advanced level of science and technology inspires man with the feeling that he has control over nature. Yet, those who are overwhelmed by such a notion may soon feel disappointment. Technology is a tool provided by Allah for the service of man and is entirely under His control. Various events show that even the most advanced technology is impotent to rule nature.

For instance, despite the "earthquake-resistant technology" developed by Japanese scientists, Kobe fell victim to widespread subsidence caused by twenty seconds of intense shock waves during the 1995 quake. The world's most earthquake-resistant structures built to withstand an intense jolt simply collapsed during a momentary 6.9 magnitude quake. During the previous three decades, the Japanese government had invested 40 trillion dollars in academic research to develop warning systems for earthquakes. Yet, these efforts yielded no conclusive results at all. As the millennium draws to a close, scientists are still unable to devise systems to issue warnings that could reduce the destructive effects of dangerous seismic events. Kobe was a recent example, among many others, demonstrating how vulnerable to unexpected patterns of seismic hits a modern industrialised city is.

The public was reassured that modern technology developed to predict major earthquakes would save them from complete destruction. Yet, after the disaster which reduced Kobe to heaps of rubble, it became apparent that no technology had been available to alert people to the danger. It also became apparent that the so-called "quake-resistant structures" had no resistance at all to the earthquake whose epicentre was 15 miles south-west of downtown Kobe.

Kobe, Japan's second most densely populated industrialised city and most important port after Tokyo. At 5:46 am on the 17th January 1995, twenty seconds of intense shock waves caused appalling damage. Only twenty seconds and everything people had toiled their whole lives to possess was destroyed.
The region affected by the earthquake included the populous cities of Kobe and Osaka. That is why appalling damage occurred, leaving 5,200 people dead and another 300,000 injured. The total damage was put at 200 billion dollars.3

There are certainly lessons to be drawn from such a disaster. City-dwellers, used to leading comfortable lives, were suddenly confronted with many hardships after the disaster. In a state of shock, they were unable to figure out what to do with their lives,- let alone make plans for the future.

Typhoons, Hurricanes, Tornadoes...

Typhoons, hurricanes, and tornadoes are natural disasters that people frequently experience. These disasters and their aftermaths claim thousands of lives every year. These are very strong winds, which can cause great damage to cities, killing and injuring residents, hurling thousands of trees, huts, telephone poles, cars, and even buildings miles away.

Great typhoons in particular can cause giant sea waves to raise suddenly from the seabed. In this phenomenon, powerful storms send waves speeding at hundreds of miles per hour across the ocean against seacoasts. In such cases, water rises onto the land and heavy rains cause serious floods in delta regions.

In February 1988, a hurricane caused extensive damage when it struck Florida. The hurricane demolished buildings and hurled automobiles onto buildings. Automobiles and households scattered by the hurricane.
A tornado big enough to sweep away homes and reduce a whole city to rubble. In February 1988, after a hurricane's passing in Florida, a heap of powerboats.
The transformation of winds that are generally experienced as mild breezes into powerful storms capable of moving buildings no doubt forces us to look for the great power making such events happen. The same rationale discussed in the section on earthquakes is also true for typhoons, hurricanes and tornadoes: if Allah willed it so, man would very frequently be confronted by such natural disasters. While recovering from disaster, human beings could suffer another. In the Qur'an, Allah reminds man that winds are under His control:
Do you feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not cause you to be swallowed up by the earth when it shakes (as in an earthquake)?
Or do you feel secure that He Who is in heaven will not send against you a violent tornado (with showers of stones), so that you shall know how (terrible) was My warning? (Surat al-Mulk: 16-18)
However, Allah protects man against hazards. He only occasionally sends against them violent storms. This is surely to give man a warning. The intention is to remind people that their ultimate purpose in life is to be servants of Allah, that they are but impotent against Allah's might and that they will be judged on the day of judgement.Volcanoes

As well as the vibration or shaking of the ground caused by sudden movement or rupture of large masses of rock within the earth's crust or upper mantle, volcanic eruptions are another spectacular form of natural disaster. There are about 1,500 active volcanoes around the world today; 5504 of them exist on land while the remainder are under the oceans. These volcanoes can erupt at any time in extremely destructive ways that no-one can anticipate in advance. When they erupt, they can kill the residents of nearby cities in addition to destroying crops and covering farmland with ash.

A volcano erupting.
The bus in the middle of the sea of lava reminds one of the Pompeii disaster.
Some catastrophic eruptions that took place in this century as well as earlier in history made indelible impressions on the human mind. These eruptions wiped many cities off the map and killed numerous communities.

There are certainly lessons to be drawn from the volcanic eruptions witnessed in history. Mount Vesuvius in Italy, for instance, buried Pompeii, a city whose residents led a life of total debauchery, under a storm of hot lava. It is striking that 20,000 inhabitants of this prosperous city were asphyxiated mostly by the pyroclastic flows that swept through it on the 24th August 79 CE.

In our own day, however, the dormancy of volcanoes can often end abruptly and they can explode at unexpected times shooting steam and ash thousands of feet into the air. In the meantime, pyroclastic flows sweep through areas causing irrecoverable damage to whatever they encounter. Another adverse effect of eruptions is the harmful clouds of gases and ash carried by winds into populated areas. These terrifying winds, sometimes about 90 miles per hour, set everything on fire and engulf cities like sun-extinguishing canopies.

One of history's worst disasters occurred in 1883 when Krakatau, in the East Indies, erupted explosively, generating a sound-wave heard 3,000 miles away and creating tsunamis up to 125 feet high. The waves razed 165 coastal villages and killed 36,000 people.5

Filling the entire horizon in June 1991, searing clouds of ash-laden gas - a lethal pyroclastic surge - spew from Mount Pinatubo in one of the 20th century's most violently explosive eruptions.
Volcanoes are memorable not only for their tragically high death tolls but also because they erupt in extremely destructive ways that cannot be predicted. The eruption of Nevado Del Ruiz is an example. This was an eruption of minor intensity. In comparison, its intensity was only 3% of the eruption of Mount St Helens. After being dormant for 150 years, Nevado Del Ruiz erupted in 1985 melting the snow and ice on its summit. So devastating was the lahar, or river of mud, that flowed down the volcano's slopes and into the Lagunille River valley, that some 20,000 residents in Armero, Colombia perished, entombed in hot mud as they slept. This event was the worst volcanic disaster since Mount Pelee annihilated St Pierre in 1902. Mount Pelee claimed 30,000 lives when it sent a nuee ardente, or pyroclastic flow, into the town of St Pierre. 6

Allah demonstrates how suddenly man can meet his death by means of such disasters and thereby calls on him to ponder the purpose of his existence on earth. These incidents send a "warning". What is expected in return from man, who can conceive of his Almighty Creator, is not to indulge distractedly in the affairs of a short life of 50-60 years and neglect the eternal life, the hereafter. We should keep in mind that death will come upon all men one day and that everybody will be judged in the presence of Allah:
One day the earth will be changed to a different earth, and so will be the heavens, and (men) will be marshalled forth, before Allah, the One, the Irresistable. (Surah Ibrahim: 48)
Tsunamis

Great surges of water (tsunamis) at times may ravage coastal cities.
Seismic sea waves or tidal waves are caused by a sudden uplift or subsidence of the sea floor or by volcanic eruptions. Some tsunamis can be as destructive as atom bombs.

Floods

Allah surely creates all these disasters as "warnings" to mankind. He is exalted in power and He has power over all things. Allah testifies to this in the verse: "He has power to send calamities on you, from above and below." (Surat al-An'am: 65) That there are so many serious physical threats around the world no doubt underlines one important reality. With disasters, in only a matter of seconds Allah may take back whatever He has granted man. Catastrophes may strike anywhere at any time. This is a clear demonstration that no place exists on earth that can guarantee man's security. Allah says this in the following verse:
Do the people of the towns feel secure against the coming of Our wrath by night while they are asleep? Or else, do they feel secure against its coming in broad daylight while they play about (carefree)? Do they then feel secure against the plan of Allah But no-one can, (unwisely), feel secure from the plan of Allah, except those (doomed) to ruin! (Surat al-A'raf: 97-99)
Water, granted to man as a favour, may in times turn out a disaster by the will of Allah. It is incomprehensible that man witnesses one or two floods every year and still disregards the possibility of experiencing such a calamity himself.

Wildfires and fires caused by human neglect may cause major losses.
A tornado big enough to sweep away homes and reduce a whole city to rubble.
Ice falling at close to 100 miles an hour shattered automobile windows in Tampa, Florida, during a 1992 thunderstorm that cost some 25 million dollars in property damage.9 The roof of a house damaged by hailstones. In 1997-1998, "El-Niño" raged over many cities. The total damage all over the world was put at 20 billion dollars.(8) A city affected by El-Niño Although water is of great significance for life on earth, devastating floods remain to be a threat.

A Lesson from History: The Titanic

History abounds with cases of people relying on technological breakthroughs and totally disregarding the might of Allah. That is exactly why many disasters have gone down in history as painful lessons for everyone. Each one of these events is important in the sense that it reminds man that neither wealth nor power, science nor technology has any power to resist the will of Allah.

Numerous examples of such incidents can be given. The best known is the famous Titanic, a huge ocean liner 55 meters in height and 275 meters in length, which sank nearly ninety years ago. The Titanic, intended to be an "assault on nature", was a grand project that employed a team of engineers and as many as five thousand people. Almost everybody was absolutely convinced that this ship would never sink. The ocean liner was a masterpiece of technology with many engineering advances that pushed back the limits of its day. Yet those who relied on the technical prowess of the ship did not take into consideration one important fact stated in the verse "The command of Allah is a decree that is made absolute" (Surat al-Ahzab 38) and that everyone will sooner or later meet his fate. Eventually, a minor failure led to the sinking of the ship and advanced technology could not save the Titanic from her bitter end.

From what the survivors of Titanic related, the majority of her passengers gathered on the deck to pray when they realised the ship was about to sink. In many sections of the Qur'an, this tendency of human behaviour is repeated. In times of serious trouble and danger, man sincerely prays and seeks the help of his Creator. However, when delivered from danger, they immediately turn away in ungratefulness:
Your Lord is He that made the ship go smoothly for you through the sea, in order that you may seek of his bounty. For He is unto you most Merciful. When distress seizes you at sea, those that you call upon - beside Him - leave you in the lurch! But when He brings you back safe to land, you turn away (from Him). Most ungrateful is man! Do you then feel secure that He will not cause you to be swallowed up beneath the earth when you are on land, or that He will not send against you a violent tornado (with showers of stones) so that you shall find no-one to carry out your affairs for you? Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back a second time to sea and send against you a heavy gale to drown you because of your ingratitude, so that you find no helper therein against Us? (Surat al-Isra: 66- 69)
One might never have experienced such a disaster, yet one should always remember that, at any time, one may find life stripped to its fundamentals. Accordingly, man should always occupy himself with the remembrance of Allah since "the power is wholly Allah's." (Surat al-Baqarah: 165) On the other hand, once a catastrophe strikes, one might not have the opportunity to change his ungrateful attitude towards Allah and seek to repent to Him. Death may be very sudden:
Do they see nothing in the government of the heavens and the earth and all that Allah has created? (Do they not see) that it may well be that their terms are nigh drawing to an end? In what message after this will they then believe? (Surat al-A'raf: 185)
By the Mercy of Allah
Each one of them We seized for his crime: against some of them We sent a violent tornado (with showers of stones); some were caught by a (mighty) blast; some We caused the earth to swallow up; and some We drowned (in the waters): It was not Allah who injured (or oppressed) them; They injured (and oppressed) their own souls. (Surat al-'Ankabut: 40)
What has been discussed so far is intended to remind those who forget their purpose in creation of an important fact: everything on earth owes its existence to Allah, the Creator who has created the entire material universe. In other words, everything's existence is consequent upon the exercise of the will of Allah. Therefore, nothing has a being separate and apart from Allah. The Qur'an tells us that nothing is beyond Allah's control: "Allah has full power and control over His affair; but most of mankind know it not." (Surah Yusuf: 21)Nevertheless, as Allah makes clear in the second part of the verse, the majority of people are not aware of this. They assume, during the course of their lives, that no misfortune whatsoever will befall them, never thinking that they too are vulnerable to any of those devastating disasters. We feel that "others" experience such terrifying incidents and that "we" will always live in safety. News about disasters, accidents or epidemics surely makes us feel sympathy for the sufferers. We indeed share their sorrow; however, as disasters recede into memory, we become less concerned and such an attitude proves to be a passing interest for us. Once we immerse ourselves in the flow of daily life or face personal problems, we quickly develop a sense of apathy and remain indifferent to those who have been through disaster.

Nevertheless, the notion that every day of one's life will be the same is a flawed one. This is evident from the warnings of Allah. Certainly, those people who were exposed to various disasters did not know that a natural hazard would throw their life into complete disarray. They certainly started that day as an ordinary one, thinking that it would be the same as the preceding ones. However, it turned out to be totally different. Most probably, it never occurred to them that, on that particular day there would be a drastic change in their lives, which would transform life into a dangerous struggle. On such occasions, lives are reduced to their simplest truths. Surely, this is how Allah reminds man that security in this world is a sham.

A majority of people pay no heed to this, however. They forget that life is short and temporary and disregard that they will be judged in the presence of Allah. In this state of heedlessness, they spend their lives in pursuit of vain desires instead of living for the good pleasure of Allah.

Viewed from this standpoint, troubles are a mercy of Allah. Allah demonstrates the true nature of this world and encourages man to be prepared for the next life. That is why what is said to be a misfortune is in fact an opportunity offered by Allah. These misfortunes are given to people so that they may seek to repent and amend their conduct. The lessons that should be drawn from disasters are related in one of the verses:
See they not that they are tried every year once or twice? Yet they turn not in repentance, and they take no heed. (Surat at-Tawbah: 126)

The world will turn into the Heaven

First God shows us troubles and evil thoroughly; later on He will show us pureness, superiority and beauty. At the moment the world is a living hell. A little later, the world will turn into the Heaven.

God has adorned the whole universe

God has adorned the whole universe (28.03.2014)

God has adorned the whole universe
Excerpt from Mr. Adnan Oktar's Live Conversation on A9TV dated March  28th, 2014

God adorns flowers, and we like them. He adorns insects, and we like them. He adorns babies, and we like them. He adorns human beings, and we like them, masha’Allah. I looked at those thorns as I came in from the garden. They are getting ready to bloom. They have opened in the form of three buds. When fully open they are read and exquisite. Their leaves are bright. But toward the end of summer they fade of course. Almighty God creates them to be beautiful, but they are all mortal and finite.

Violets are also lovely when they first bloom. One cannot bear to cut them. But then they fade and die. However, there is no death in paradise. Neither flowers die in paradise, nor fruits, nor leaves. When fruits are plucked they still remain just where they were. You pick one and it is replaced right away in the same place. One cannot bear to pick them. For example there was a lemon tree in the garden, full of lemons. For a long time we never picked them. Lemon trees have their own life span, of course, and we wanted to pick them. Go and pick those lemons, I said. But of course that troubles the heart. One will not be able to see lemons on those branches for a long time. But that is not the case in paradise. You pick them and they regrow instantaneously, masha’Allah. All beauties belong to our Lord, praise be to God.

Muslims prefer beauty, but also seek wisdom in ugliness

Muslims prefer beauty, but also seek wisdom in ugliness (05.04.2014)

Muslims prefer beauty, but also seek wisdom in ugliness
Excerpt from Mr. Adnan Oktar's Live Conversation on A9TV dated March  05th, 2014

(Viewer’s letter) I heard you say, "All beauty and blessings belong to God. All praise is for the name of God.” Do ugly things not belong to God, too?

What right have we to call what God has created beautiful or ugly? Not at all. God teaches us the concepts of beauty and ugliness in the Qur’an. God tells us to avoid ugliness. He tells us to avoid filth. The concept of beauty is stressed in hundreds of places in the Qur’an. We cannot develop our own ideas against the Qur’an. But God’s beauty is also present in what is ugly. A hyena is ugly, but one feels sorry for it. Its ugliness is comical. Or there may be an ugly person, but you feel affection and compassion for them. You love that person many times more because of their moral virtues than you do someone with an attractive face but no moral values. There are many people who are ugly but morally beautiful. And there are people who are attractive but who are arrogant proud, difficult and morally impaired. People will not like that attractive person. They like people who are good natured despite being ugly. Our view is mistaken.

Believers must see ugliness and beauty and prefer beauty, but look for the wisdom in ugliness. You can say a work of art is ugly when you examine it. Indeed, beauty emerges from the concepts of beauty and ugliness. Beauty emerges from that comparison. Beauty emerges when comparing someone we call beautiful to someone we call ugly. But there is no ugliness in paradise. Ugliness is created solely for the test in this world. Everything is beautiful in paradise. Tree, plants, children and foods are all lovely. But there are also ugly foods in this world, and ugly people. But human beings have the advantage of being able to convert ugliness into beauty through their moral values. They can become radiant and much-loved people. You see such people around you.

Patience is for life. We will love God for all eternity

Patience is for life. We will love God for all eternity

Patience is for life. We will love God for all eternity
You will only show patience for this trial for 70 years. But God will make you live happily for all eternity. Those 70 years of training, everything that you endured and showed patience would exalt you, it would make you more beautiful and radiant. Almighty God would of course test your love. He will of course see how devoted you are to God. And He will show that to you as well. You will see how much you love God. You will see how loyal you are. For instance when a person has a beloved one and he commits to his beloved one to death. He/she falls down and gets up and finds him again coming to her/his help, he falls ill and again finds him coming to her/his help, right? One would never leave his beloved one alone. God is the real Beloved One. And under no circumstance, even if 7000 years pass by, one would endure all sufferings. That is a characteristic of a lover. God likes that a lot; one shows patience for the sake of love he feels for Him. That is exactly a sign of love. What is the characteristic of a lover?  He doesn’t leave aside his beloved one despite of all sorts of sufferings, all sorts of hardships. And God shows us to which extend we carry that spirit of a lover. That is because we will take the greatest pleasure from the existence of God, His Manifestations in the Hereafter.
Explanation of various verses from Surat Al-Fussilat by Mr. Adnan Oktar
Surat Al-Fussilat; Verse 49
Man never tires of praying for the good and if evil touches him, he despairs and loses hope.
“Man never tires of praying for the good,” says God.  Meaning he constantly asks for good things, youth, health, happiness, goods and possessions, he wants to be accepted to the best schools, he wants to have a joyous life. “… and if evil touches him,” meaning if something that doesn’t serve his interests, something that bothers him happens or when he loses his money, his means or health “… he despairs and loses hope.” Meaning he says; “I will never be saved from this point on, I am done, and there is nothing that could be done for me!” He gets lost in despair. What kind of desperation is this? He doesn’t have any hope from God [May God forbid] he says; “God cannot save me from this point on.” That means, in his mind he says; “My connection to God has been severed.” That is a disaster that befalls upon a majority of people. That is a grave disaster. That is why we need to ask for perfect submission to God. We should always be asking for perfect faith and submission to God. A Muslim should constantly ask for that blessing saying; “O Lord, make me a servant of Yours with perfect faith.” That is because it is a great blessing.
Surat Al-Fussilat; Verse 51
When We grant blessing to a man, he turns away and draws aside but when any evil touches him, he is full of endless prayers!
“When We grant blessing to a man, he turns away and draws aside…” So God says that he doesn’t feel thankful and he knows that blessing as his right, doesn’t feel thankful and turns away. What is meant by turning away and drawing aside is that he doesn’t comply with the Qur’an, he doesn’t act in accordance with Islam, he doesn’t feel thankful and he doesn’t give his thanks to God. “… but when any evil touches him, he is full of endless prayers.”Normally such a person doesn’t pray to God. A Muslim constantly prays saying;“O Lord Praise be to You, thanks be to You, increase my faith, increase my knowledge, deem me successful in goodness.” God says such people do not pray to God. When does such a person pray? “… when any evil touches him, he is full of endless prayers!” For instance when an accident happens, when a scourge befalls on him, when he is in trouble, then he remembers Me, says God. “Otherwise, when I give him blessings, he turns away,” He says. From Who? Such people turn away from God when in perfect health. God says; “But when they are in trouble, they are full of endless prayers!” So God says; “I do not want this, I want them to pray to me when they are perfectly well and also when they are in trouble. I am their Lord.” Almighty God says; “I am the One Who gives all those troubles and I am the One Who will take away those troubles. I am the One Who gives them sickness, and I am the One Who heals them. Consequently they should have a constant connection to me.” God says this for all His servants, for all of us.
Surat Al-Fussilat; Verse 52
Say: "Just think. If this is from God and you deny it, who will be in greater error than he who is in open dissent?"
Say; “Just think. If this is from God and you deny it…”  Meaning if you do not accept the sufficiency of the Qur’an, if you embrace fanaticism, if you accept bigotry... “.. Just think... who will be in greater error than he who is in open dissent?” God says. This is a statement which refers to bigots and radicals. That is the statement of Almighty God. “… who will be in greater error than he who is in open dissent?” God says that radicals are the ones in greatest error by being in open dissent.  They are in open dissent; dissent from what? From the Qur’an. “Just think. If this (the Qur’an) is from God and you deny it…” How do they deny? Through superstitions. You tell them; “God said this,” and they say “No, the command of this verse has been revoked.”When you ask “how did it happen?” They say; “A goat ate it.” The other one says; “people have been made to forget.” “God made it forgotten.” The other one says; “The command of that verse has been annulled.” You say; “there is a verse about this,” they say; “verses are of no importance, but hadiths are.”[May God forbid].  Which hadiths? Made-up hadiths. They have invented a new religion with made-up, fake hadiths, and they call it Islam.  Actually, Islam is the religion taught in the Qur’an. Religion that consists of made-up hadiths cannot be called Islam. That is a polytheistic religion.
 Surat Al-Fussilat; Verse 53
We will show them Our Signs on the horizon and within themselves until it is clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not enough for your Lord that He is a witness of everything?
“We will show them Our Signs on the horizon and within themselves.”We will show them both in the outside and in themselves. “… until it is clear to them that it is the truth.”  We are at those times right now. People started to see clearly that the Qur’an is the Truth. They are seeing the facts leading to faith within themselves and they also see the events taking place in the outer world; for instance they see the incidents that take place in Syria, in Palestine. All these incidents taking place all over the world constitute the outer world and they are seeing the disasters in the outer world. People also saw that the Qur’an, the Command of God is the Truth.  When people do not live by the Qur’an, the world is dragged into a disaster. They have seen this. “Is it not enough for your Lord that He is a witness of everything?” The abjad calculation of this part gives the date 1990. That is the date all these incidents started to take place.
